Skiing Part I

I took Friday morning off because we got our first nice sunny day since Dec 20 2007. I couldn't resist the call of the moutain so I strapped on my skis and headed up the mountain.

Looking toward the South. Fog was beginning to fill the valleys.

I'm usually not a big fan of black and white but when I came across this scene I knew it would be perfect for a BW conversion. I was excited to go home and see what it looked like, it turned out as I had hoped.

  4. I found your photo (the black and white) on Wunderground, which is my favorite spot for seasonal screen backgrounds for my work pc. Living in Ponte Vedra FL, the snow scapes are refreshing (our winter just came and went... two days below 30 degrees). I especially love the snow creatures (you call them forms, but I have an over-active imagination). After perusing your site, I think I may have to find time for a trip to Alaska. Question: Is most of your skiing hike up, ski down? the area looks so remote I'm assuming there's no lifts!

  5. Hi Tag, happy to see that you like our photos. I would have a hard time not experiencing the wonders of winter. Although the warm temperatures do sound very nice.

My skiing on Wrangell Island is the hike up/ski down variety. I'm the only person who regularly visits this particular mountain in the winter. There are other mountains on the island that are snowmobile playgrounds. Believe me, there are times when I wish there was a lift but then I remember how unique it is to have untracked powder all to myself.

  6. Great photos! I found one of your pics on Wunderground.com as I feverishly checked the snow report. Only 1-2 inches expected here in upstate NY today....I wish I was skiing up there in AK!

  7. Hi ski bandit, sorry to hear your lowly snow report for today. It is a different world up here. I wait for the sunny days to go skiing since there is always several feet of untracked fresh powder due to our almost continuous snow accumulation.

My husband and I are planning to take my parents to AK one day, as soon as my 1.5 year old is a little older. Can't wait to see all this beauty in real!! JB in Lake in the Hills, IL

  9. Hello JB, thank you for your compliments. Be careful about taking your child up here. My brother and I both drove up here from Michigan with an uncle when we were young, and now we both live here. (:
