Stuffed Onions 9.4.10

A little while after leaving the Jackson's, we were traveling down the river near the Scud. We were going around a bend when we noticed some tricky hydraulics in the water. There were waves coming at the sides of the canoe, and also whirlpools. We were the last in line and Paula was in front of us. All of a sudden a side wave swept her underneath. My first thought was to save Paula, but then Quent 'encouraged' me to keep paddling. So we passed Paula, so we didn't join her in the water. I felt so bad for her. Her husband Dave swept over and it took awhile to get her out of the water. It was also tricky to fetch her kayak. We all met at the nearest sunny beach so Paula could change into dry clothes. We didn't have to go too far to find our next camp.

"The Pig" supply boat.

Dinner was made by Steve and Dan. And they sure put on a feast! We had stuffed onions, which is like meatloaf cooked inside an onion. They stuffed the onions, wrapped them in aluminum foil, and put it on the campfire coals. It was delicious! Paula shared some of her chocolate mint brownies with us. Yum!

WET 9.5.10

I love the rain. I really do. Sometimes when the sun is shining I wish it would rain. But this was definitely a day where I wished the rain away. It wasn't much fun paddling in the rain. We were prepared for the rain, but the rain took away the beautiful scenery around us with the low clouds. The rain blew in our faces, so I had to keep my head down. I hardly ever looked up. I did look up when we went through Little Canyon, which had some tricky currents we were told we'd want to avoid.

We stopped for lunch. It was pretty miserable. I was cold and everything was wet.

Wet camp 9.5.10

Once we settled at our campsite, it was either a very light mist, or no rain. We all attempted to dry some of our clothing/gear near the campfire. A tarp tent was build for our "kitchen". Dinner was made by Britta.

The campfire was popular this evening. It felt so nice to be warm and somewhat dry. Paula and I washed our hair, which felt great! By the time we ducked into our tents it was raining again.

Little Bear, Little Bear what do you see? 9.6.10

"I see people looking at me." So Quent took this picture, not even realizing there was a bear in the background. See the brown dot across the water in the middle of the picure? The bear was spotted later and then Quent looked through our pictures and laughed when he spotted it. I was always sleeping when this kind of wildlife was spotted.

The morning wasn't too wet, but I don't remember it being very dry either. I don't like packing up a tent when it's wet.

Leaving camp 9.6.10

Quent walked around and took pictures of everyone's tent set up. Here's just a couple:

Ice Cave I 9.6.10

The ice cave looked so little from a distance...

And this is what it looked like with me standing in front of it.

Pretty cool, aye?

Ice Cave II 9.6.10

This picture needs some explanation. It must have rained a little bit that morning, or our canoe seats were a little damp from the rain the day before. No matter what, I felt like I needed to air out. Yes, I'm pretty dorky.

Lunch 9.6.10

We normally stopped for lunch anytime between 12:00 and 1:00 for about an hour. Dave would get out the chairs and tables so we could feast. We were spoiled! It was great!

Steve and Dan were using up some leftover ground meat for hamburgers.

Peace!

Quent enjoying this particular meal, which he put like 1-2 sticks of butter in. It was hilarious, but it was really good!

And what would a camping trip be without chocolate? Someone had the right idea. Actually, we had SO much chocolate on this trip. Yum!

Our Canoe 9.6.10

This was my (Christina's) view on our trip...except I sat up higher than it looks in the picture. I enjoyed being in front. I got to experience some fun riffles and got splashed!

I think this picture is out of sequence, but this is the only picture I saw that someone else took of us in our canoe. I don't know who captured this photo...but thank you!!

Here fishy, fishy... 9.6.10

Across from Sterling (where we would be camping for the night) there was a pretty slough with a waterfall. Some paddled to the waterfall, which was quite challenging because of paddling against the current. Quent and Dan thought this was an excellent spot to take a bath. The rest of us thought they were crazy! The water was SO cold! In this picture Quent is running into the water. Brrr!

Kim caught the appetizer.
